There are various points at which you might run into a problem while installing and running Wine, Spirits & Beer. If you are having problems, either look in the appropriate section of this document, or try the Notting Hill web site on the Internet.
Installing Wine, Spirits & Beer
To install Wine, Spirits & Beer on your computer, run the program called Installer, which is on the CD-ROM. This will open up a window showing the discs attached to your computer on the right, and an icon marked "Drag this icon to your hard disc" on the left. Place the cursor over the icon and, while holding the mouse button down, drag it onto your hard disc. Do not try to drag it onto the CD-ROM (which is called Drink). When you let go of the icon over your hard disc, the installation will start.
When the installation has completed, the installer program ensures that your Macinotsh is restarted, so that the changes it has made are properly configured. You will also find that there is a new folder on your hard disc called "Wine, Spirits & Beer". This contains the application program, also called "Wine, Spirits & Beer". You can run this by double-clicking it.
If you have problems running the insatller because it complains that QuickTime or Sound Manager cannot be replaced, you should Quit from the installer, and remove the files "QuickTime™" and "Sound Manager" from the Extensions folder inside your System Folder. Then remove the file "Sound" from the Control Panels folder inside your System Folder. You will now be able to run the Installer.
If, after installation is complete, the application complains that QuickTime is missing, or that Sound Manager is not present, copy the three file "QuickTime™", "Sound Manager" and "Sound" from the CD-ROM into your System Folder. Reboot your Macintosh and run the application again.
These installation problems only occur on some Macintosh machines, and will be fixed for the final release version of "Wine, Spirits & Beer".
Running Wine, Spirits & Beer
Need to Select Media
The first time you run Wine, Spirits & Beer you may see a dialog box which asks you to locate the folder "Media". This means the program cannot find your CD-ROM drive. The first step is to make sure that you have the Wine, Spirits & Beer CD-ROM in your CD-ROM drive. You will see an icon called DRINK on your Desktop if you have the CD-ROM inserted correctly.
Assuming you do have the CD-ROM inserted, navigate through the dialog so that you have the CD-ROM open. one way to do this is to click the Desktop button. This will then display a list of all the items on your Desktop, including your hard disc and the CD-ROM, called DRINK. Click on DRINK, then click the OPen button. You will see a list of items on the CD-ROM. One of these is called Media. Click once on this and then click the Select button to start Wine, Spirits & Beer.
Not Enough Memory
Most problems you encounter when you run the title are likely to relate to the amount of memory the title requires to run. As installed on your system, Wine, Spirits & Beer is set up to run optimally on a computer which displays thousands of colours on screen, and has 12 megabytes or more of RAM.
The amount of memory that Wine, Spirits & Beer requires to run depends on the number of colours your screen is capable of displaying. If your screen can show thousands of colours, you need more memory for the title to run.
There are three symptoms that you may encounter which show that you do not have enough memory to run Wine, Spirits & Beer. These are:
Symptom One: The title occasionally quits unexpectedly while showing a message saying there is "not enough external memory".
Symptom Two: The title refuses to load at all, complaining that "There is not enough memory to open 'Wine, Spirits & Beer'".
Symptom Three: The title refuses to load at all, complaining that "Could not find QuickTime.lib". This message also indicates that you do not have enough memory.
If you encounter any of these symptoms, you should increase the amount of memory available on your machine. You can do this either by buying more RAM chips, or by turning on virtual memory. This second option is considerably cheaper and easier, so is recommended.
To turn on virtual memory, open the Memory control panel, and make sure that Virtual Memory is on. You should set the After restart value to at least 16M. Close the control panel, restart your Macintosh, and run Wine, Spirits & Beer again.
Title Freezes or Crashes
If you find that Wine, Spirits & Beer sometimes freezes or crashes your machine, there are several steps you can take to try to correct the problem:
1) If your computer is a PowerMacintosh model, make sure that the Modern Memory Manager option in the Memory control panel is turned on.
2) If you have a system tool called Control Strip (usually found on PowerMacintosh computers with a PCI bus), try turning it off.
